So fans were shocked when John Mayer made a surprise appearance at a charity fundraiser.
The soulful singer performed at the Livingston Town Proper benefit concert in Montana, in aid of firefighters that saved his home and others from a summer wildfire.

He's back! John Mayer performed at a Montana
concert Wednesday night to benefit firefighters - the first time in two
years since throat surgery
'I just want to help out like a neighbour,' John told Bozeman Daily Chronicle.
The 35-year-old pop and blues musician has embraced Montana after buying a home there last year.
John's performance was triumphant in that it marked the first time that he sang live on stage following throat surgery two years ago.

Completely healed: John, pictured leaving Spago
restaurant in Beverly Hills on January 12, had two surgeries for a
throat inflammation but says he's all better now and ready to tour again
While the Pine Creek fire raged across Paradise Valley, the singer was in Los Angeles undergoing treatment for a granuloma, an inflammation of tissue in his throat that had prevented him from singing since April 2011.
After he was sent a picture of how the flames were encroaching upon his PIne Creek property, he said he felt guilty talking to the people who raced to clear out his things.
'It’s my house,' John revealed. 'I want to help save it. I want to be the guy on the front porch with a bucket of water.'
Fortunately his home was spared, and he made a vow to someday help the people who helped him.

Now the singer-songwriter is back and in full swing.
'I’ve made it here and I’ll never leave,' John told Wednesday night's audience.
The concert also featured performances by Zach Brown and Clay Cook of the Zac Brown Band, and John's current band members David Ryan Harris, Sean Hurley and Aaron Sterling.

Going strong: John has been dating singer Katy
Perry since last year; they were spotted enjoying a romantic dinner date
at Osteria Mozza in Hollywood on January 5
The Daughters singer intends to do what he wanted to do a year ago - promote his fifth solo studio album.
'The record still holds up for me as something I want to play through for people,' John said. 'I love it. It speaks to who I am and there’s still what I want to experience.
'I’ve still yet to have some of these three minute and 30 second songs open up on stage.'
John - who has been romantically linked to singer Katy Perry since late 2012 - maintains that his granuloma is completely healed.
